February 2026, Issue 02

Dear BSBMTCT member,

We are delighted to see the sunshine over the past couple of days as we advance rapidly towards Spring. We hope you are managing to take some time out during your day to enjoy this and have a moment of peace and calm during your busy days. This month has flown for us at the BSBMTCT as we have made strides towards delivering against our strategic aims and enablers; in particular the continued modernisation of our Society and the forging of mutually beneficial partnerships, enabling us to achieve more, making the Society and registry self-sustaining. By way of a quick reminder our 5 strategic aims are to:

SA1       Develop and enhance the BSBMTCT Registry so that it efficiently provides high-quality, timely data and insight that informs commissioning, policy, research and clinical practice.

SA2       Facilitate pioneering research and clinical trials that improve the outcomes of treatment and care.

SA3       Serve as the representative voice and advocate for transplant and cellular therapy professionals, ensuring their interests – and the interests of patients – are protected and promoted.

SA4       Provide high-quality and impactful education & training to transplant and cellular therapy professionals, and facilitate the sharing of knowledge and good practice across the community

SA5       Develop guidelines, protocols and quality standards that safeguard and enhance the interests of transplant and cellular therapy patients and professionals.

Our three enablers are to:

EN1      Modernise and professionalise our Society and registry

EN2      Grow and diversify our income

EN3      Forge mutually beneficial partnerships

To this end, as our partnership income is growing, we have registered with HMRC for VAT and Gift Aid. Our growth in income has enabled us to double the statistical capacity available and to proceed with the appointment of a 4-day Chief Executive role, and we expect the advert will go live in the coming week or so.

Anthony Nolan partnership

We have started to work closely with the Data and Analytics team at Anthony Nolan as part of our strategic partnership with Anthony Nolan. Michael von Geldern, the Director, has facilitated a data discovery workshop considering in detail how we create greater insight through improved ways of working. This is a very exciting collaboration for our registry team, with the potential to automate processes, allowing staff to achieve more.

We would like to congratulate Neema Mayor and Shelley Hewerdine and colleagues for their work on the Anthony Nolan Research Data Management Project, which is a joint project with the BSBMTCT. The project is ongoing with the aim to expand the data management team to support more research. The pilot project was recently published in the eJHaem.

 UKSCSF and bespoke registry planning

The BSBMTCT had representation at the latest UK Stem Cell Strategic Forum Oversight Committee meeting held on the 6th February. This was a meeting to report back on progress across all of the work streams. We reported back jointly with Greg Judge, Senior Policy Manager with Anthony Nolan about the process to scope out a new HSCT and Cellular Therapy registry bespoke to the UK and Republic of Ireland that:

  • identifies clinical improvements that enhance patient outcomes, experience and quality of life
  • provides secure national transplant and cell therapy data that attracts global life sciences R&D investment.
  • ensures that the data is efficiently available to all those who can benefit from its use including commercial partners

As phase 1 of this process, we have undertaken a critical appraisal of our current registry and the wider infrastructure, capturing the strengths and weaknesses of our BSBMTCT registry and the infrastructure it operates in. We believe that the second phase of this project involves convening a high-level project group to firstly define the functional & capability requirements of a new bespoke UK registry, and then define the breadth of data that should be collected, stored and linked. We are very aware of the far-reaching implications of this work. We will be consulting widely, particularly with data and quality managers in local centres.

16th Edition (2025) of the BSBMTCT Executive Summary of Transplant & Cellular Therapy Outcomes and centre reports

The 16th Edition (2025) of the BSBMTCT Executive Summary of Transplant & Cellular Therapy Outcomes in the UK and ROI, summary report and centre reports have now been completed and are available. Many centres should have received their centre reports, and we are grateful for those that have already taken the time to read the centre reports thoroughly and provide us with useful and constructive feedback. If you have not received these yet, do get in touch, it may be that they have yet to be released due to non-membership subscription payments for 2025. Any enquiries please get in touch with Head of BSBMTCT Registry, Julia Lee at julia.lee@kcl.ac.uk

Our 17th Edition (2026) will also be available this year and the timetable for this including deadlines for data submission will be communicated in the next few weeks. Thank you all for your patience during this time, while we get back on track with this.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Dr Graham Mcllroy and colleagues for the recent acceptance of the manuscript titled “ Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation outcomes for teenage and young adult patients with acute leukaemia: A BSBMTCT registry study” to be published in the British Journal of Haematology. This is one of 3 papers which will come out of this important work for the Teenage and Young Adults (TYA) population.

Both manuscripts can be found on our website as and when available:  https://bsbmtct.org/publications/
