Dear BSBMTCT member,
We hope you are well and enjoying summer. This month’s bulletin includes an important tribute to Professor Paul Veys, updates on our Registry and Education programmes, news of a new Executive Committee role focused on Artificial Intelligence and Technology, and forthcoming Society events.
Professor Paul Veys – A Tribute
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our dear colleague and friend, Professor Paul Veys.
Paul was a true pioneer in stem cell transplantation, particularly in paediatric transplantation and cellular therapy. Many BSBMTCT members will have worked alongside Paul or benefited from his mentorship, leadership and vision. His commitment to improving the lives and outcomes of children and young people was unwavering, and his dedication transformed the field, leaving a lasting impact on patients, families and colleagues around the world.
Paul was not only an exceptional clinician and researcher but also a kind, humble and generous individual. He was respected and admired by all who had the privilege of working with him, and his warmth, wisdom and friendship will be deeply missed.
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Paul’s family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time. We are immensely grateful for his outstanding contribution to the field and for the enduring legacy he leaves behind. He will be remembered with great respect, gratitude and affection. We plan to pay tribute to Paul at our Education Day in November.
BSBMTCT Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Technology Champion
The BSBMTCT will shortly launch nominations and elections for a new AI and Technology Champion role on the Executive Committee. The Champion will:
The Champion will not be expected to develop AI systems personally but will help guide the Society’s approach to technological innovation. Instead, the Champion will help the Society identify priority problems that technology can solve, build partnerships, stimulate innovation, advise committees and ensure developments remain clinically valuable, ethically robust and aligned with the Society’s strategic objectives.
17th Edition (2026) of the BSBMTCT Executive Summary of Transplant & Cellular Therapy Outcomes and centre reports – now in progress
Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to submit their data on time, enabling the export to be taken. Francis Adams, our Senior Medical Statistician, is now working equally hard to clean the data ready for analysis. Once we have made sufficient progress, we will be able to communicate more accurate timings regarding delivery. Please note that centre reports can only be released once 2026 membership subscriptions have been paid in full. For allograft centres, this applies to the first invoice only.
If you have any questions, please email Head of Registry, Julia.lee@kcl.ac.uk or Senior Medical Statistician, francis.adams@kcl.ac.uk
BSBMTCT Data Registry E-Learning Induction Manual Update
In our September 2025 Bulletin we wrote about the collaboration work between the BSBMTCT Data Registry and the International Quality Forum for JACIE Centres (IQFJC). We are now delighted to announce the release of 3 new modules onto the E-learning platform. More modules will be released later in the year.
We now have the following 4 QM modules online and available:
We encourage Quality Managers to access the platform and explore the new resources.
All of this would not have been possible without the hard work of Ruth Paul, BSBMTCT Induction Manual Lead, and Rob Wosley, Stuart Kennedy and Ben Charles, who are members of the IQFJC who helped to write the modules. We would like to express our thanks to each of them.
Access is via a secure platform requiring registration with an NHS email and available for free to all BSBMTCT members: https://bsbmtct.org/e-learning/
By way of reminder, there are numerous modules available for Data Management Staff. If you haven’t made use of them, we encourage you to take a look!
Clinical Trials Sub-Committee (CTSC) Meeting
Our next CTSC meeting will be held virtually on Wednesday 23 September 2026 from 11am -3pm. Agenda and dial in details will be shared shortly. We are looking forward to discussing our current and future studies together.
BSBMTCT Membership Invoices 2026
