May 2022 Issue 5

Dear BSBMTCT member,

Unbelievably, Summer 2022 is almost upon us and we hope that the sunlight of the ‘new normality’ is increasingly shining into your workplaces and lives in general…

We had an excellent ‘virtual’ BSBMTCT Scientific Meeting 2022 led by Matt Collin on 11th May, with great speakers and lightning updates of the Clinical Trials Sub-committee and IMPACT studies. Congratulations to the winners of the John Goldman Awards – Clinical: Callum Wright, from Newcastle and Scientific: Ilaria Michelozzi, from UCL!!!

However, we hope that our upcoming BSBMTCT events will enable long-missed personal contact and networking:

  • BSBMTCT Advanced Cellular Therapies scientific showcase and sub-committee meeting brings together an exciting programme on Wednesday 29th June 2022. Programme and registration: https://hartleytaylor.co.uk/bsba-home/. Many thanks to Sara Ghorashian and Maeve O’Reilly for leading this!
  • BSBMTCT Education Day – Tuesday 1st November 2022, which will be a Hybrid Event at Cavendish Conference Centre, 22 Duchess Mews, London W1G 9DT – Save the Date, more details to follow…..

National Clinical Impact Awards 2022 round opened on Wednesday 27th April 2022 and closes at 5pm on Wednesday 22nd June 2022. BSBMTCT is able to support 5 new awards across the 3 levels. BSBMTCT support for citations is now closed, we will inform successful applications in due course. Many thanks to Gordon Cook for continuing to chair this Sub-committee for the next two years.

Commissioners’ report 2022

The 13th Commissioners report preparation is now underway, to be made available in late summer to members that have paid their annual subscription. Thank you to all members that have paid.

EBMT Indications paper and BSBMTCT Indications Sub-committee

The EBMT have updated their Indications Recommendations for 2022, https://www.nature.com/articles/s41409-022-01691-w, while the BSBMTCT Indications Sub-committee is gaining momentum under the leadership of Victoria Potter. Victoria and sub-committee colleagues plan to build upon the valuable work of Kim Orchard and Rachael Hough, with Sharon Hodgson (from NHSE), in reforming how BSBMTCT indications are linked to NHSE commissioning policies and service specifications in line with current practice and developments.

Covid-19

BSBMTCT guidelines continue to a reference point https://bsbmtct.org/bsbmtct-and-covid/. Many thanks to Kanchan Rao and Beki James for updating the UK Paediatric BMT Group guidelines (16 May). These are living documents linked to NICE NG164 Guidelines, which are in the process of being updated.

Mission, Vision & Values

Last but certainly by no means least, our Mission, Vision & Values have been uploaded to our BSBMTCT Website https://bsbmtct.org/our-mission-vision-and-values/ following ratification at the Executive Committee meeting on 10th May 2022. These important principles underpin the activities of our Society across the whole of our BMT and cellular therapy community with the goal of supporting good clinical and scientific practice and improving patients’ lives.

Warmest wishes, John Snowden, Kim Orchard, Fiona Dignan, Deborah Richardson, Eduardo Olavarria, & Julia Lee
